“I grew up thinking I was going to be a veterinarian. I've always been in wildlife rehabilitation or animal shelters volunteering and stuff like that. I'm very active in that and I've always been fascinated with the science, and conservation is a big, big deal to me.”
“Composting, recycling, reusing, upcycling—that's pretty important to me.”
“My husband and I are amazed by how little trash we [create] for a family of three. When my son was living at home, we would have one bag of garbage put out once a week, less than one full bag. And we were pretty impressed with that.”
What is something you enjoy about being out here?
“Oh my gosh. Look at my office! I feed the birds—I make the hummingbird food. I feed them in the winter time out there. In the winter time when there's frost, when we get a really cold day but it's damp, and all the trees are frosted, it looks like something out of Narnia when you're driving in and you're just stunned by how gorgeous it is and that's something I never tire of.”
“Just the view, the drive, the science that goes on and knowing that the scientists here are trying to do better for the environment to make a change. That's really important to me because I want to hopefully make a change someday, you know, in anything we do.”
Ruth Ann takes care of many, many administrative details for the Tyson community every day. She is the point person for gate access, handles accounting and payroll, and manages purchase of materials and supplies.
