Historical Tyson Landowners
PhiLlip Kais
Phillip Kais’ name was notably spelled in a multitude of ways. Several iterations of Phillip were used, including Phillip, Philipp, Philip, and Phillipp. Additional variance on his last name included Kais, Kaes, Kaehs, Kaehz, Kase and Case. He co-owned land at Tyson in 1878 with Christopher Morchell.
Kais’ lifespan was unknown. Little is known about his family other than that his wife’s last name was Lvest, and his children were Walter Phillip Kais and Emelia Kais. His children were born in 1887 and 1885, respectively.
The Philip Kaes House still stands west of Castlewood, MO, and was dated to have been built around 1850.
In 1879, the court case Kaes v. Missouri Pacific Railroad occurred, where Kais sued the railroad company after a train car hit and killed three of his mules.
There are no records to indicate that Kais or his family were enslavers.
