Tyson researchers Rachel Penczykowski, Kasey Fowler-Finn, and Kim Medley have been awarded seed grants from Taylor Geospatial Institute to conduct research using geospatial technology. Rachel and Kim, together with Roger Michaelides (Earth and Planetary Sciences), Fengpeng Sun (UMKC) and Adam Smith (MOBOT) will be developing fine-scale climate models and combining those with ground-based temperatures in urban greenspaces to assess the variability in the accuracy of downscaled climate predictions across heterogeneous landscapes.
Kasey Fowler-Finn and Kim Medley, together with Jason Fritts (SLU), will be developing techniques for capturing sound generated by insects that communicate through vibrations. The team will also work with TGI to use drone-based LiDAR technology to capture habitat complexity to understand the relationship between 3D habitat structure and vibrational insect diversity.
