Jul 27, 2018

Tyson Undergraduate Fellow Derek McFarland presented his research, "Prevalence of Babesia sp. parasites in a population of Carolina Wrens," at the Saint Louis University McNair Summer Research Symposium. In addition to being a Tyson fellow, Derek is a McNair Scholar and a rising junior at Harris-Stowe State University. He gave an impressive talk summarizing his independent project and educating the audience about Babesiosis, an emerging tick-borne disease. Great job, Derek!

Derek explains how he looks for Babesia parasites in avian red blood cells.
